Sensory alarm broadcasts late-night fridge raids on users’ social networks
Hot on the heels of our recent story about Aherk!, the app that encourages users to complete tasks by threatening to publish embarrassing photos to their Facebook wall, we got word of yet another online tool involving a form of self-blackmail. Rather than focusing on productivity, however, the Virtual Fridge Lock aims to help users stick to their diets. Its method? Send an alert to their social networks when the fridge is opened late at night. READ MORE…

The Trials of Owning a Business

Here at Alpak Station, we like to keep things honest and fun. Welcoming and productive. Never lame and trivial. But lately I think the staff at Alpak has been through a very rough time. For example, we’ve had less customers and therefore less money. For anyone, this is a big deal. Fortunately I have amazing employees/managers who constantly keep those smiles on their faces and try their best to refrain from complaining. But in the end, Times are Hard. We all know how that feels. If not, you’re lucky to say the least. But with these times, we need to think of ways to keep us motivated and encouraged. Especially for those who are leading a staff to greatness. There are no small roles at Alpak Station. Nor small customers.

Seth Godin actually touched on what I look to have Alpak Station lean more toward as we continue our business journey.

"Here’s the law: Any project, if broken down into sufficiently small, predictable parts, can be accomplished for awfully close to free.

Jimmy Wales led the tiny team at Wikipedia that destroyed the greatest reference book of all time. And almost all of them worked for free.

The Encyclopedia Britannica was started in 1770 and is maintained by a staff of more than a hundred full-time editors. Over the last 250 years, it has probably cost more than a hundred million dollars to build and edit.

Wikipedia, on the other hand, is many times bigger, far more popular, and significantly more up-to-date, and it was built for almost free. No single person could have done this. No team of a thousand, in fact. But by breaking the development of articles into millions of one-sentence or one-paragraph projects, Wikipedia took advantage of the law of the Mechanical Turk. Instead of relying on a handful of well-paid people calling themselves professionals, Wikipedia thrives by using the loosely coordinated work of millions of knowledge people, each happy to contribute a tiny slice of the whole.”

If you read this and thought it was about working for free or getting by… stop reading please. Go watch TV.

If you felt inspired or motivated to make a difference, proceed. I read this and thought about Alpak Station and how much of a difference we could make without spending millions. Or sacrificing what matters. And in my eyes, integrity and honest are probably the most important characteristics for a company to have.

I apologize to my employees/managers for this hard time we are having. I should have paid more attention as we were growing and developing. But is it too late to make a difference? I hope not, but I am not the one who determines that. Our customers are the ones who do. This may be the wrong thing to say or the least business savvy thing to say, but in my heart it is the truth.

We pledge to provide the best service with integrity and honesty at our stores until we can’t anymore. Keep a look out for us making some changes and becoming more like the Wikipedia of packaging
